James Worts arrived in York in 1831; the distillery itself was added in 1837, right in step with our campaign year.
It is a hub of genuine industry and noise — a good place to be dropped into on arrival in town, if you are coming in from outside.
Walter’s Cooperage
Near the distillery is Walter Croft’s cooperage workshop, where he and one apprentice make and repair barrels. If you pass through here early, you may see a shipment of barrels being loaded for Fort York — from the outside, it might look like a whiskey shipment.
It is not. They are empty barrels, headed to the fort to be filled with gunpowder. See Fort York: Stone Powder Magazine.
